The Ontario Dental Association: A Misuse of Dentist Membership Fees

Fellow dentists, have you seen this article? People Want to Stay with the Ontario Dental Association.

The ODA celebrates spending our membership fees for irrelevant degrees for staff and training for their dogs. How many dentists would be supportive of this? They may talk of staff retention, but I don’t think there are too many dentists that will say that ODA staff are top performers and that investing in their performance is paramount for their retention. Does the ODA board really give this much autonomy to CEO Frank Bevilacqua?

Please comment below about how you feel about this.

Funding such activities raises serious questions about the appropriate use of organizational resources. Dentists already face financial burdens in maintaining their practices to ensure the best care for their patients, and supporting their employees. How can ODA staff take such liberties with our membership fees? We need to start getting active and ensure that the ODA is a dentists-centric run organization.

Dentist’s membership fees should be spent on initiatives that directly benefit dentists.

For the ODA, the priority should always be on improving the brand of dentists and ensuring our voice is heard on major issues like CDCP or other government-funded programs.

We must demand more of our membership dollars from the ODA.

Dentists of Ontario, Engage ODA can’t wait to hear your thoughts and opinions!

  1. The ODA is run by Mr. Bevilacqua and his staff for their own benefit. The ODA board of directors is just a rubber stamp for the CEO’s agenda. Our dues should be no more than $ 500. The dues are so high because it goes to pay their high salaries of the 60 employees and a lot of travel and meals at expensive restaurants and a lot of free alchol for the board members.

  2. The ODA CEO on top of his ridiculous salary, is given a AMEX black card for a personal expense account, which he uses freely, taking his wife along on ODA sanctioned business. Do they personally pay her way? Is this true? Be transparent. He also receives a car allowance yet he could easily take public transit as he lives in Toronto. Lower member costs and lower carbon footprint. When was the last time he had an EXTERNAL and independent performance review? Why wasn’t the independent legal investigation into his conduct made public to our members? We can’t afford this ineffective CEO. He and the old Board members such as Edward Busvek, Homa Jammehdiabadi, and Sara Worth must be unelected at our next General Council meeting.

  3. It’s come to light, once again, from inside the ODA, that hundreds of thousands of dollars of our membership money has been spent on “going after” anyone who speaks out against the current CEO and board. Apparently over $600,000 dollars was spent on legal fees to remove an outspoken board member who dared question to see, before they approved, the CEO’s new salary raise and contract. How can board members approve something they were not allowed to see? The CEO is the ONLY employee of the board so why all the secrecy? Look at all other NFP associations – they post their CEO’s salary and contract for all their members to see. Confidentiality is an excuse to “hide” the money spent on someone who uses our association as his personal fiefdom. And now he has been caught colluding with the ODA’s in house attorney to “plant questions” at ODA General Council? How dirtier does it get? These aren’t accusations – they are facts!
